South Forsyth has started a season at 5-0 exactly once in its 34 year history. The year was 2015 under then head coach Jeff Arnette. that was the season where they beat Norcross and Tucker in home playoff games. and then lost to eventual state champion Colquitt County, again at home. But that final Northstar is in some dispute because people remember that South Forsyth had to forfeit a game early in that season for playing an inelligible player.
There is no such drama this season. The War Eagles are a legitimate 5-0 and ranked #8 in the GHSA poll. James Thomson, in his second season at South, has found himself a ringer in quarterback Khayel Sam Fong-Talia, who is a multiple option dude who has thrown for ten tds and run for 7 in 4 games. He’s averaging 120 yards rushing and 140 yards through the air and is among the esrly leaers for region mvp.
Fong-Tulia has not been limited by his receivers. The corps numbers many and they are all amazing. But there is a pair of seniors who are stealing the spotlight, and I suggested the team come up with a nickname. Friday night, Will Watkins caught two touchdowns and fellow Senior Carter Ross caught one. Before the game we found out that the team had decided on a nickname, and it is (drum roll please): Salt and Pepper! Modified to SOFO saltnpeppah of course.
#2 and # 12 have had it going on all season. They’ve got five region games against the rest of Forsyth Counties’ BIG schools to cement that legacy. And that starts this Thursday night at LaSouth Forsyth 35 Starr’s Mill 14mbert.
