South Forsyth used an aggressive defense and a ball control offense to earn a hard fought 27-10 victory over rival Lambert in the 2018 version of the Backyard Brawl.  It’s the first win at Lambert for South Forsyth in five tries in the ten year history of the rivalry. Both teams came into the game at 3-2 with visions of victory and first place in the opening contest of Class 7A Region 5 play, and the notion of the qame as a defensive struggle lived up to that pre game hype.  The score was 7-3 South at the half. South was plagued by turnovers and penalties, but the defense bailed them out on each occasion. Lambert had the home crowd believing early, stopping the War Eagles on third down and one at their own 12 yard line, but could not muster any offense off the turnover. Once again, the War Eagles allowed their opponent to score a touchdown in the first few seconds out of the locker room, pushing Lambert to a 10-7 lead.  But that was the last the Longhorns would put points on the board.  South launched a ferocious pass rush, blitzing on both running a passing downs, to harass Longhorn quarterback Peyton Rich into poor throws the rest of the night. Meanwhile the South offense worked the clock with a pounding running attack behind the 110 yards of tailback Jordan Brunson and timely QB draws from Drew Morris to tally three second half TDs. The 20 unanswered points culminated with a five minute, 65 yard drive that featured two successful fourth down carries by Brunson to ice it. Much of Brunson’s success came after Offensive Coordinator Troy Morris borrowed from Defensive Coordinator Trevor Williams’ personnel, installing defensive tackles and captains Louis
Gonzalez and Jamaal Camp on the offensive line.

South Forsyth improves to 4-2 with the win, 1-0 in Region 5 7A and a share of first place with Milton (4-1, 1-0), a 41-0 winner at home over West Forsyth (1-5, 0-1) and Forsyth Central, which continues their remarkable resurgence under Coach Frank Hepler.  The Bulldogs beat North Forsyth (2-4, 0-1) 24-20 at North to improve to 5-1 overall after going winless last season.

A big win for the War Eagles sets up next week’s clash with Milton at South.  Listen to the replay with the call from Greg Golden and Doug Thomas here.
