January 22, 2025
South Forsyth High School is excited to announce the hiring of James Thomson as the new head football coach. Coach Thomson brings an extensive and accomplished coaching background, spanning multiple states and levels of competition, and is eager to lead the South Forsyth High School War Eagles into a new era of success.
Coach Thomson joins South Forsyth High School after serving for two years on the University of South Florida coaching staff. Previously he served as the head coach at Winter Haven High School in Florida, where he revitalized a struggling program, turning a 1-9 team into district champions with an 8-4 record and a second-round playoff appearance in his first season. His coaching career has been marked by transformational leadership, competitive excellence, and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes to realize their goals.
With over 20 years of coaching experience, Thomson has led programs at several high schools, including Tucker High School (GA), Northview High School (GA), and Gainesville High School (FL), where he guided his team to a 14-1 record and a state championship appearance. He was named the 6A Coach of the Year in 2012.
In addition to his high school coaching experience, Thomson has worked at the collegiate level as an offensive analyst for UCLA, supporting running backs and recruiting efforts across multiple states. His leadership extends beyond the field, serving in key roles such as State Football Chairman for the FACA, a member of the FHSAA Football Advisory Committee, and Director of the Florida Nike Coach of the Year Clinic.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Thomson to South Forsyth High School,” said SFHS Principal Pam Bibik. “His proven track record of success, his ability to develop student-athletes, and his passion for the game make him the ideal leader for our program. We believe he will make an immediate and lasting impact on our students, our team, and our community.”
