The group of Seniors being honored at South Forsyth High School before the War Eagles Region 5 contest against Forsyth Central is the winningest group in the history of the school. Seasoned as Sophomores in the 13-2 state quarterfinal team of 2015, current senior offensive lineman Jordan Nelson and defensive end Ryan LaFlamme were starters on that team. Tempered by adversity in injury riddled 2016, these Seniors are putting together a 2017 season of legendary proportions in a county that just 25 years ago boasted one high school. The explosive growth of Forsyth County, Georgia, has all five current High Schools competing in Class 7, a group of some 45 of the biggest schools in Georgia. To date, South Forsyth is undefeated on the field, their only blemish an unfortunate forfeit to Pinecrest Academy due to an ineligible player. They beat a Roswell team ranked #2 in the opener, a dramatic victory in the Corky Kell Classic that ruined the Hornets season nearly before it began and set the stage for what was to come. Another road test win at South Gwinnett, a home victory over then #10 Lassiter, domination of backyard rival Lambert in the Region opener and a tight, hard earned road win over a very good Milton team have them poised to enter the playoffs as Region champs with a home playoff opener. But there is the little matter of two more games. The finale at West Forsyth is the final huge challenge to this storybook season. Two years ago, in the Den at West, an onside kick led to a go ahead score and a shocking West Forsyth win. But that rematch is not to be spoken of yet. First up is a winless Forsyth Central team that, in spite of its record, is well coached and would like nothing better than to start a winning streak against this powerful team. South Forsyth Head Football Coach Jeff Arnette admits that the team can’t look past the Bulldogs; and won’t. But it is the final regular season home game, and thus a chance to honor this Senior Class that has been so special. So they’ll hold of on unleashing the beast for a few moments Friday night to recognize this outstanding group of young men. Coach Arnette joins us here to talk about his 8th and winningest Senior Class at South Forsyth, and gives us a glimpse at the football game to follow.
